Questions to Ask Before Choosing an Auto Repair Service

Choosing an auto repair service is the key to solving your car issues.

The world of car repair is a confusing one when you’re not a car person. Finding a mechanic with decent rates that you can trust with your vehicle shouldn’t be hard. But, there are so many mechanics, all with different specialties, and there’s also the question of honesty.

At the end of the day, if you’re going to find a good mechanic that you can stick with, you need to know what questions to ask. In this post, we’re going to tell you what those are so you can feel confident about who’s working on your car.

Are the Employees ASE Certified?

Whether you’re going to an auto glass or muffler specialist, certain mechanics will have certain certifications to prove that they’re knowledgeable and experienced. Many are part of the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), which is given to individual mechanics, rather than the auto body shop.

Naturally, you want the best possible mechanic working on your car. If they don’t have any ASE certified employees, that doesn’t mean they’ll do a bad job, but it’ll give you peace of mind.

How Long Have You Been in Business?

Getting a sense of how experienced the shop is will give you a level of confidence dropping your car off with them. You can ask the boss this or just look it up online. Most reputable auto shops will have websites that let you read up on the history of the business, what they specialize in, and customer testimonials.

Testimonials are a huge deal because they can give you an indication of the professionalism and quality of work that the shop typically does. Who better to get this information from than their previous customers?

Can You Give a Written Estimate?

Always get an estimate from a few different shops before deciding on one. Even better, get the estimate in writing. In the event that a repair costs much more than you were quoted, you’ll have the estimate to refer back to.

What Kind of Warranties Do You Offer?

The best auto shops will offer warranties on their service. This shows a level of self-confidence in their own work that should instill some confidence in you, the customer. A warranty should guarantee you quality service (repairs done on time and/or repairs that last a certain amount of time) or you get your money back.

Not every shop will offer a warranty on their service or the parts that they use, but the ones that do will usually let you know. If you don’t see their warranties advertised anywhere, ask them about it.
